Tonsser receives a new investment of DKK 41 million (€5,5m) — the app that makes it possible for millions of young players to follow their dreams
The football app Tonsser has raised DKK 41 million in a Series A funding round led by new investor, Alven Capital. Existing investors SEED Capital and Wellington Partners also participated in the round. SEED Capital invested for the first time in 2015 and led the seed round in 2017. With the new investment, Tonsser will further grow their position as the #1 youth football player app and match pro clubs with undiscovered talent.
The company was founded in Copenhagen back in 2014 by Peter Holm and Simon Hjære Hansen, who saw an opportunity in the football industry, characterized by club managers and coaches having all the power and a lot of unnoticed talent going to waste. The founders wanted to change the industry by leveraging data in a platform to discover hidden talent and democratize football by empowering players through transparency and information.
The purpose of the app is to create new journeys and opportunities for players via data. By using the app, youth football players can create their own identity, track their performances, share videos, attend trials; and build their football resume to attract the attention of clubs and scouts on the platform. In short, Tonsser could be the next Linkedin in the football industry!
“Across the football world great performances by hard working football players continue to go unnoticed. With this new investment we want to scale the platform to new parts of the world and create more opportunities for players to unlock their potential.” says Peter Holm about the new investment.
Tonsser has in only four years managed to become Europe’s largest football performance app and currently lives in eight countries, including Denmark, Germany and France. They have attracted more than 830.000 football players and 8 paying football clubs, whereof Huddersfield is the first Premier League club, using Tonsser to track youth talent. Anchored in player data, Tonsser uses player performance stats to deliver individual performance-based player ratings. By offering clubs a data based scouting approach, the goal is to give more players a fair chance at being discovered.
“Football is the world’s largest sports market in terms of both players, fans and business. This year Tonsser proved that their player data can radically change talent scouting from strictly manual process to data driven. This a first for the football industry and has generated a lot of interest from players and major clubs. We believe Tonsser has the potential to become a global category winner.” says Niels Vejrup Carlsen, General Partner at SEED Capital.
Tonsser was recently selected as one of the 5 Next Nordic Superstars to present at Slush 2018. This is quite an accomplishment when considering the companies chosen in previous years, such as Kahoot!, Taxify, Seriously Digital Entertainment and Peakon.
Current trends in the industry of sports such as the emergence of scouting, video and player-tracking technologies, indicate that Tonssers timing is spot on! We are very optimistic about the future of the company and are excited to be a part of this journey.
Forza Tonsser!
